Plasterer Guide

Plasterboard lining, solid set and cornice shape what a later coating will show, and the lining class is read on the state register before the first sheet goes up.

  • ABN checked when a business has one on the listing.

How it works

  1. Name the finish

Plasterboard lining, solid set, cornice, or a patch: the paperwork should use those words so a skim is not compared with a full re-sheet.

  2. Let framing go first

Sheets telegraph a twisted stud. Packing or a new member is carpentry, and it belongs before stopping begins.

  3. Confirm the lining class

Read the state register to see whether plasterboard lining is registered for this job, and name the board a wet area will need.

Services

  • Plasterboard linings

Sheets on walls and ceilings, with beads, back-blocking and a finish standard you can point at.

  • Solid set

Set coats, patches and repairs on masonry or on older substrates that are not a sheet product.

  • Cornice

Running or fixing the junction so wall and ceiling read as one line.

  • Patches after other trades

Closing holes once plumbing or electrical work is done, brought back to the surrounding plane.

  • Wet-area board

The sheet a waterproofer and a tiler expect, which is not the board used in a bedroom.

What a plasterer does

Plasterers line and finish the surfaces everyone else will coat. Plasterboard fixing covers sheets on studs and ceilings, back-blocking, beads on outside corners, and the stopping that brings joints back to a flat plane. Solid plaster is the wet craft: a set coat on brick or an older wall, run cornice, and patches that have to disappear under a raking light. Cornice and the reveals around windows belong in the same conversation, because a room looks unfinished when only the broad wall was described. Mark each crack and each brown stain, and say whether the leak above them has actually stopped. A new sheet on a wet ceiling will stain again next week. Wait until that ceiling is fully dry.

The standard of finish should be named. A garage seen from a few steps away is not the same stopping as a hallway that takes morning sun across the joints. This trade does not redesign the frame, and it cannot turn a twisted stud into a flat wall without packing or a new member from the carpenter. Wet areas need the sheet and the fixing pattern a waterproofer and a tiler expect, a different board from a bedroom. Cracks that keep returning are often movement, not a thin coat of compound. Ask whether the paperwork is plasterboard lining, solid set, cornice only, or a skim over a film that should have come off. Ask what finish you are getting before paint, and whether cornice is included. A skim coat and a full sheet replacement are different visits.

When you need a licensed plasterer

Plasterboard lining in New South Wales is a class to confirm on the NSW Fair Trading search if that state registers it for the job you are buying.

Whether plasterboard lining is a registered class in Victoria is read on the Building and Plumbing Commission plastering entries.

The QBCC licensee register is Queensland's list; plasterboard lining is looked up there rather than inferred from a heading.

Consumer and Business Services holds South Australia's occupational search, which is where a plasterboard lining class would be read.

Western Australia lists classes at Building and Energy, which is where plasterboard lining or solid plaster would be named.

CBOS publishes Tasmania's tradesperson list, and plasterboard lining is something to find on the entry before sheets go up.

Access Canberra keeps Australian Capital Territory construction registers, where a plasterboard lining class is verified.

The Northern Territory building practitioner register is the list to read when you want to know if plasterboard lining is registered there.

What changes the price

  • A stairwell ceiling, a raked room, or sheets that must come through a narrow hall changes the fix.
  • Water-resistant board, a particular cornice profile, or compound a painter has asked for are materials choices.
  • Notes a waterproofer wants recorded before tiling are small pieces of paperwork and easy to skip.
  • Closing a hole before a morning inspection is a different booking from a whole house of stopping.
  • Sanding after hours in an occupied home is its own agreement, because the dust does not stay in one room.
  • Twisted framing, a ceiling stained by an old leak, and rooms still full of furniture are conditions on the day.
  • Adding the garage after only the living rooms were described is a change of scope.

Hiring checklist

  • The page says plasterboard lining, solid plaster, cornice, or a combination.
  • Sheets, beads, cornice profile and who buys them are named.
  • Back-blocking and the treatment of external corners are included or excluded in words.
  • The finish standard is described for rooms that get raking light.
  • Wet-area board is specified where a waterproofer or tiler follows.
  • Window reveals and the ceiling are in the scope if you expect them done together.
  • Existing cracks are raked and reset, or noted as something a skim will not cure.
  • Protection of furniture, floors and joinery is described.
  • Sanding dust, and how it is contained in an occupied house, is mentioned.
  • You know whether a painter can start from this finish or will need another skim.

Questions to ask

  • Is the job plasterboard lining, solid plaster, or cornice only?
  • Who supplies the sheets, and who does the back-blocking?
  • Are window reveals and external corners in the same visit as the ceilings?
  • What finish is written down for stopping, so a sunlit hallway means the same thing to both of you?
  • Will wet areas be lined with the sheet the waterproofer expects?
  • Are existing cracks raked and reset, or only skimmed?

Common questions

How do I check a plasterer?

Open the state register and see whether plasterboard lining or solid plaster is a class they publish. Some states register it and some do not treat every patch the same way. Read the entry against sheets on walls and ceilings, not against a business card.

What should a plastering quote say?

Whether it is plasterboard lining, solid set, cornice or a patch, who supplies sheets and beads, how corners and back-blocking are treated, the finish standard, and whether wet-area board is specified. Protection and dust in an occupied house belong there too.

Why can I still see joints after the work?

Stopping has levels. A garage and a hallway in hard morning light are not the same finish. If the frame is twisted, compound will not hide it. Ask for the standard in writing before the first sheet is hung, and ask the carpenter to pack or replace a bad stud first.

Is wet-area board ordinary plasterboard?

No. Showers and other wet rooms need the sheet the waterproofer and the tiler expect. Using a bedroom board there is a different job from the one the membrane was detailed for.

What is outside plastering?

Redesigning the frame, electrical and plumbing holes that are still open, exterior cement render, and the final coating are other trades. A plasterer can patch once those are done. The patch is not a licence for the trade that made the hole.
